Who Needs This

Every VAT-registered business, every tax period.

As per the FTA's VAT Return User Guide, every tax registrant must report on both sales/outputs (standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt, and reverse-charge supplies, plus tourist refund amounts and customs-declared imports) and purchases/inputs (standard-rated purchases and reverse-charge supplies you're recovering input tax on).

Timing

28 days from the end of your tax period.

VAT returns and payments are due within 28 days from the end of your tax period. Large taxpayers file monthly; small and medium taxpayers typically file quarterly. Even with no transactions, a NIL return must still be submitted on time to avoid a penalty.

What You'll Need

Information every VAT return needs.

  • Name, address, and TRN of the registrant
  • Tax period and submission date
  • Value of taxable supplies and output tax charged, by Emirate
  • Value of zero-rated and exempt supplies
  • Value of reverse-charge supplies
  • Recoverable input tax and total payable tax for the period
Why This Matters

What inaccurate or late filing costs you.

  • Filing late, or with inaccurate details, results in administrative penalties from the FTA
  • Even with no transactions in a period, a NIL return is still required on time
  • Getting the standard-rated vs. zero-rated split right avoids review at the FTA's end

Common questions

FAQs on VAT return filing in UAE.

When is the VAT return filing deadline? ⌄
On or before the 28th day of the month following the end of the tax period. If the 28th falls on a Friday, Saturday, or national holiday, the due date moves to the next business day.
How do I report standard-rated supplies vs. exports? ⌄
The VAT return form has separate columns for standard-rated supplies (5% VAT) under 'Standard Rated Supplies' for your Emirate, and exports generally under 'Zero-Rated Supplies' — subject to conditions for zero-rating to apply.
What happens if my return shows a refundable amount? ⌄
You can either carry the refundable amount forward to your next VAT return period, or claim a refund — the FTA requires 20 working days to process a submitted refund application.
What if I have no transactions for a tax period? ⌄
You are still required to submit a NIL return on or before the due date, to avoid an administrative penalty.
How often do I need to file — monthly or quarterly? ⌄
Large taxpayers file monthly returns; small and medium taxpayers are generally required to file quarterly.
Can I claim VAT paid on business expenses or purchases? ⌄
Yes — being a VAT registrant, you can claim the VAT paid on eligible expenses or purchases.
